Stephanie Gilmore has sealed her second World Surfing Title with a stunning last minute win at Sunset Beach in Hawaii.
The twenty year old from Tweed Heads in New South Wales has cemented her spot as the world’s dominant female surfer, claiming back to back titles in closely contested final in meager one and a half meter waves.
Gilmore faced up against Brazil’s Silvana Lima in the final and didn’t seal the victory, and the world title, until the dying moments when she managed to carve out the highest score of the day with an eight point five.
According to Gilmore, when she awoke on the final day of competition to the less than impressive swell, she was not overly confident of grabbing the world title ahead of main rival Sofia Mulanovich and seven-time world champion Layne Beachely.
However, much to her delight, the two were eliminated in the semi finals of the competition, leaving Gilmore needing victory in the finals to claim the title.
The second world title came as justification for her first, proving it was no fluke.
She one her first title last year – becoming the first female rookie in history to win a world title but the raw talent she displayed as a youngster early in her career meant she was not without pressure to succeed.
Brimming with the confidence of a second world title and another tour win, Gilmore will head into the Billabong Pro Maui in Honolulu Bay as a red hot favourite to put her supremacy in women’s world surfing well and truly beyond doubt.
